Most flooring failures trace to installation errors, not material defects. Here is what to avoid.

Skipping Subfloor Preparation

Installing flooring over an uneven, squeaky, or wet subfloor: the most common and most costly flooring mistake. Soft spots in the subfloor create soft spots in the new floor. High spots in the subfloor create humps visible in a rigid LVP or tile floor. A wet subfloor causes hardwood and laminate to buckle and LVP to lift at the seams. A proper subfloor assessment (leveling, moisture testing, squeak elimination) before installation is not optional — it is the foundation of a flooring installation that lasts. A flooring installer who is willing to skip this step is not providing a quality installation, regardless of how good the material they are installing is.

Not Acclimatizing Hardwood

Installing hardwood without allowing it to acclimatize to the home’s temperature and humidity for 3 to 7 days causes the boards to expand or contract after installation. Boards that were installed too wet (higher moisture content than the home): dry out and gap significantly, leaving wide spaces between planks. Boards installed too dry: absorb moisture from the home and expand, causing buckling or cupping. The acclimatization requirement is not optional for solid or engineered hardwood — a rushed installation that skips this step will show the consequences within weeks to months.

Choosing a Thin Wear Layer on LVP

A 6-mil wear layer on LVP: the minimum for residential use in a low-traffic room. In a kitchen, entryway, or any high-traffic area: the wear layer is scratched through within 3 to 5 years, revealing the print layer below. A 12 to 20-mil wear layer: appropriate for residential high-traffic areas. Commercial grade (28 mil): for high-traffic residential or for pet households. The wear layer thickness is not always prominently displayed in the product marketing — ask specifically for the mil rating before purchasing any LVP.

Get at least two or three quotes. A single quote gives you no basis for comparison. Floor flatness standards: most flooring manufacturers specify that the subfloor must be flat to within 3/16 inch over a 10-foot span (or 1/8 inch over a 6-foot span). Ridges or dips beyond this tolerance cause: visible waves in LVP (which is rigid and bridges low spots and contacts only high spots), cracked grout in tile, and squeaking in hardwood. A simple way to check: slide a 10-foot straightedge across the subfloor and look for gaps underneath it.

It depends on the product. Some LVP comes with an attached underlayment (a foam or cork layer pre-attached to the back of the plank). For these products: do not add additional underlayment (the total thickness can cause locking mechanism failure). For LVP without attached underlayment: a 2 to 3-mm foam underlayment improves sound attenuation, adds slight cushioning, and accommodates minor subfloor irregularities. Never use more than 3mm total underlayment under a floating LVP floor.
