Why Does Retaining Wall Drainage Matter?

Poor drainage is responsible for the majority of residential retaining wall failures. Here is what proper drainage looks like and why it is non-negotiable.

Hydrostatic Pressure: The Wall’s Primary Enemy

When soil behind a retaining wall becomes saturated with water, the water exerts hydrostatic pressure against the back of the wall — in addition to the weight of the soil itself. Saturated soil exerts approximately twice the lateral pressure of dry soil. A wall designed for dry soil that regularly retains saturated soil: overstressed and eventually cracks, tilts, or collapses. Proper drainage behind the wall reduces or eliminates this hydrostatic pressure by allowing water to drain freely through the wall system rather than accumulating behind it. Drainage is not optional for any retaining wall that retains more than 18 inches of soil.

The Drainage System Components

A complete retaining wall drainage system includes: coarse drainage aggregate (3/4-inch clean crushed stone, not pea gravel) placed immediately behind the wall to a depth of at least 12 inches into the retained area. A geotextile filter fabric (landscape fabric placed between the drainage aggregate and the native soil behind it) to prevent fine soil particles from migrating into and clogging the drainage aggregate. A perforated drain pipe (4-inch diameter) at the base of the wall, embedded in the drainage aggregate, carrying water collected from the retained area to a daylighting outlet at the end of the wall or to a catch basin. The drain pipe outlet must be located where the collected water can discharge freely without re-entering the retained area.

Weep Holes

In a poured concrete or mortared masonry retaining wall (which has no open joints for natural drainage): weep holes (typically 3-inch diameter holes through the wall face at 6 to 8-foot intervals, positioned at the base of the wall) allow hydrostatic pressure to relieve itself by allowing water to flow through the wall face. Weep holes must be kept clear of debris. A mortared masonry wall without weep holes: accumulates hydrostatic pressure that will eventually crack the wall or push it forward.

Working With a Contractor on This Project

Getting the right outcome on any home services project starts before the work begins. A few consistent practices make the difference between a smooth project and a frustrating one.

Get at least two or three quotes. A single quote gives you no basis for comparison. Two or three quotes reveal the market rate for the work, expose scope differences between bidders, and let you assess contractor communication quality before any commitment is made. The lowest bid is not automatically the best value if the scope is thin or the materials are underspecified.

Ask for licenses and insurance before work starts. Verify current general liability insurance and, for any work involving workers on your property, workers compensation coverage. Licensing requirements vary by state and trade; confirm the specific requirements in your jurisdiction. A licensed contractor who carries appropriate insurance protects both parties if something goes wrong during the project.

Get the scope in writing. A written proposal that specifies materials, labor scope, timeline, what is included (permits, cleanup, disposal), and warranty terms is the foundation of a professional engagement. Verbal agreements on any of these points invite misunderstanding. For any project over $500, written scope is non-negotiable.

Clarify the payment schedule upfront. A reasonable payment schedule ties major payments to project milestones: a deposit at signing, a payment at material delivery or project start, and a final payment at completion after a walkthrough confirms satisfaction. A contractor who requires full payment upfront before work begins is a red flag in any trade.
